In the spirit of Banned Book Month, we explore this play that was once banned because of its controversial content.

Ibsen’s Ghosts touches on many modern issues including out-of-wedlock children, venereal disease, incest, infidelity, and euthanasia. We follow Mrs. Alving in her attempt to avoid the awful truth about her deceased husband: that he was a cheating, immoral philanderer whose public reputation was a sham. The ‘‘ghosts’’ in this play are the taboo topics that often cannot be openly discussed. This is one of Ibsen’s most powerful works, but also one of his most controversial as it forces the audience to consider facing their own ghosts.
